Hedge trimming
We trim hedges to keep them at the height and shape you want, and assess overgrown hedges for reduction across North Yorkshire and County Durham.
Tell us whether you want a regular trim or a larger cutback. We’ll check the species, how far it can be reduced and the right time for the work. Cuttings are cleared when the job is finished.
Some hedges can be reduced gradually, but many conifers do not regrow from old wood. We check what the hedge can tolerate before recommending a cutback; staging the work does not make every reduction suitable.
What hedge cutting includes
- Hedge trimming
- Regular maintenance cuts to keep hedges neat and at the right height. Scheduled visits at the right time for each species.
- Hedge reductions
- Bringing overgrown hedges back to a manageable size. Gradual where needed, one-cut where possible.
- Boundary maintenance
- Keeping property lines clear, tidy and well-defined. Fence lines, walls, edges.
- Seasonal tidy-ups
- Scheduled return visits timed to the growing season. You don’t have to remember to call us.
How hedge care works
- Assessment. We look at the hedge, the species, and what you want. Height, shape, frequency.
- Quote. Written price. You know what it costs before we start.
- The work. Trimmed to the agreed height and shape. Right technique for the species. Right time of year.
- Clear up. All cuttings removed. Boundary left clean.
Hedge cutting services
We cut hedges across County Durham and North Yorkshire, including Durham, Chester-le-Street, Consett, Bishop Auckland and Darlington. Large lengths, tall conifers or overgrown reductions vary and are quoted per job.
What's not included
Hedge removal without the required consent is outside a trimming job. We do not cut where it would damage an active bird nest. If a proposed reduction would leave bare wood that cannot recover, we explain the alternatives before you decide.
Qualifications and cover. NPTC qualified. LANTRA qualified. £10M public liability insurance. We know which species needs what treatment and when. Your hedge gets what it needs, not what is convenient for the calendar.
What customers ask
Common questions
How much does hedge trimming cost?
Large lengths, tall conifers or overgrown reductions cost more. Written quote before any work.
What are the rules on cutting hedges in the UK?
Active bird nests are protected by law whenever they’re in use. We check hedges before work starts and postpone cutting if it would damage or disturb a nest. Additional seasonal restrictions can apply to agricultural hedgerows.
How often should hedges be trimmed?
Conifer hedges typically need two to three cuts per season. Mixed native hedges usually need one. We’ll tell you what your specific hedge needs.
Can you reduce a hedge that has been neglected for years?
Yes. We do it gradually over multiple seasons so the hedge grows back fuller and healthier. One drastic cut can leave bare patches that never recover.
