Fallen tree clearance

We clear fallen trees for homeowners, farmers and site managers across the region. We assess what is on the ground, where it is lying and how it can be accessed, then agree the clearance scope and price in writing.

What to do when a tree falls

Keep clear of a fallen tree, including the root plate and any suspended branches. Timber can be under tension and move without warning. For immediate danger to people, call 999. If power lines are involved, stay away and contact the electricity network operator. For urgent tree work, call us to discuss the hazard.

If it is safe to do so, send photos of the tree, where it has fallen and the access route. That lets us assess the job before we arrive and bring the right equipment. Send them by email or WhatsApp. Don’t approach a dangerous tree or try to cut it up yourself.

How we remove a fallen tree

We decide the method after looking at the tree. The size, the position and what the tree is lying on or against all matter. Most fallen trees are cut up where they lie and the sections moved clear.

On-ground sectioning
The tree is cut into manageable sections on the ground and moved clear. This is the method for most fallen trees, and the fastest where there’s room to work.
Winching and pulling
Where the tree is heavy, wedged or lying over a bank, we use a winch to pull sections clear under control before they’re cut up.
Specialist access and lifting
Trees resting on buildings may need specialist access or lifting equipment. We assess how sections can be supported and removed, then confirm the equipment and arrangements in the quote.
Stump grinding
Once the tree is cleared, we assess whether stump grinding is suitable. Root-plate handling, grinding depth and any ground reinstatement are agreed separately.

The written quote states what happens to brash, timber, stump or root-plate material and any woodchip. Logs or chip can be left only where agreed and practical. Broader site clearance, waste unrelated to the tree and ground reinstatement are separate.

Removing a tree from a building, vehicle or fence

A tree resting on a roof, a wall, a fence or a vehicle is a different job from one lying in open ground. The tree is usually still carrying load, and what it is leaning on may be holding it in place.

We assess the position before anything is cut: what the tree is resting on, which way its weight is running, whether anything is under tension, and how sections can be supported and lowered. Access for the team, for rigging and for any lifting equipment is agreed with you before the day, including where material will be landed and how it leaves the site.

Most are removed in sections under control. Where the tree needs lifting or support beyond our standard kit, the specialist equipment is arranged and quoted separately, and the written quote states what is included and what is not.

If the tree is still moving, touching a cable or holding up part of a structure, treat it as an immediate hazard and read the emergency tree work page first. Our records can support an insurance claim, but whether the work or the damage is covered is your insurer's decision and depends on your policy.

Tree preservation orders and conservation areas

We check the Tree Preservation Order register and Conservation Area boundaries for every property before removal. Permission or notification requirements depend on the site and the tree’s condition. That check can still matter where part of the tree remains standing, where a tree is in a conservation area, or where an exception is being relied on.

We confirm what is needed before work starts. Where a dangerous tree needs urgent work, we document the condition and explain any council notification required. For an immediate hazard from a standing or fallen tree, use our emergency tree work service.

Records for your insurer

If you are making an insurance claim, ask us what job records can be supplied. Any photographs, scope, quote and completion details are provided where agreed. Your policy decides whether removal or associated damage is covered; we do not promise that an insurer will pay.

Fallen tree removal pricing

If a tree has fallen on your land, we remove it across County Durham and North Yorkshire. The price depends on the tree itself, where it has fallen, the access, what it’s lying on, and whether the stump is ground out.

We price from the agreed scope after assessing the site. The written quote states the work, access assumptions, waste or timber handling and any exclusions before booking.

Urgent tree work

If a tree has fallen on a building, across a road or over a public footpath, call us now. We assess the situation from your photos and prioritise the job by risk. A tree blocking a site access at 7am is dealt with differently from one lying in a field. We get to the jobs that are stopping people use their property first.

What's not included

Full site clearance beyond the agreed fallen-tree scope, stump grinding unless quoted and work requiring traffic management aren’t included until those requirements are arranged and priced.

Qualifications and cover. NPTC qualified. LANTRA qualified. £10M public liability insurance. TPO and Conservation Area checks before work, paperwork handled. Written quote before any work begins.

What customers ask

Common questions

How much does fallen tree removal cost?

The size of the tree, where it has fallen, the access, and whether you want the stump ground out all affect the price. We give a fixed written quote after a free site visit. No hidden costs.

Can you provide records for an insurance claim?

We can provide agreed job records such as the scope, quote and completion details. Your buildings or contents policy decides what is covered, so check its requirements before booking.

Do I need permission to remove a fallen tree?

It depends on the site, the tree’s condition and whether any part remains standing. A conservation area or protected-tree status may still require a notification or consent, and exceptions have conditions. We check the position and explain the route before work starts where circumstances allow.

How quickly can you start?

Urgent jobs, such as a tree on a building or blocking a road or site access, are prioritised. We assess the situation from your photos and confirm a start time. Other jobs are booked to a date you agree.

What if the tree has fallen on my house or a vehicle?

Don’t try to move it. If the tree is against a building, we assess whether it’s safe to work on before anything is cut, then remove it in sections under control. Tell us if a vehicle is involved and we’ll work around it.

Do you grind the stump as well?

Yes. Stump grinding is a service we also provide, priced separately from the removal. We can quote for both together or leave the stump for another day. The written quote states what is included. See our stump grinding page.
