Tree Removal Cost UK — What You Actually Pay and Why

Every cost guide you find online gives you a number between £150 and £2,500. That range covers every tree in the country. It does not help you understand what your specific job will cost. It is just a placeholder.

I price tree removal every day. Here in County Durham and North Yorkshire, the price depends on five practical things. Not just the size of the tree. The rest of this guide explains what we actually charge, why, and how to get a real number for your job.

What we charge

Below is an overview of size to price ratio as guidance:

Small tree, clear access: from £350. A tree up to about 25 feet, standing in an open garden, with nothing around it. We fell it in one, process the timber on the ground, and remove everything. This is the straightforward job.

Medium tree near buildings: £550 to £950. A tree 25 to 50 feet, near a structure or fence line. This usually means sectional dismantling. We climb the tree and lower each piece under control with ropes and rigging. Two to four hours of climbing work plus ground processing.

Large tree, full sectional dismantling: £950 to £2,500. A tree over 50 feet, close to buildings, over a conservatory, or in a confined space. Full day's work for a team of two to three. Every piece is rigged and lowered. Nothing free-falls.

Emergency call-out: from £450. A tree has come down or is about to. Same-day response. Costs more because it displaces scheduled work.

What changes the price

1. Access. This is the biggest variable. If our truck and chipper can drive right up to the tree, the job is fast. If the tree is at the bottom of a long garden with no side access, every branch and log has to be carried out by hand. That doubles the time on some jobs. We once quoted two identical trees on the same street. One with driveway access, one behind a terraced house with no passage. The second job cost nearly twice as much.

2. Surroundings. A tree next to a greenhouse, over a fence, or near power lines must be dismantled in sections. That takes skill and time. If it is near power lines, we can coordinate with the network operator, which adds time and sometimes a fee.

3. What you do with the wood. Taking everything away is the standard price. If you want the timber left as logs, that saves time and reduces the cost. Stump grinding is usually separate, from £80 per stump.

4. Tree condition. A healthy tree is predictable. A dead or diseased tree is not. Dead branches can break unexpectedly during climbing. Rot in the trunk means we cannot climb safely and may need a mobile elevated work platform, which adds equipment hire.

5. Location. Prices vary by region. Tree removal in North Yorkshire versus County Durham is relatively similar, although some remote or hard to reach sites towards the edges of both counties may be factored into the price.

How the price breaks down

Labour: 50–60%. Two to three people on site. At least one climber with NPTC qualifications. Ground crew processing timber and feeding the chipper.

Equipment: 15–20%. Chainsaws, rigging ropes, climbing harnesses. A professional climbing kit costs £2,000 to £3,000. A chipper costs £15,000 to £30,000. All of it maintained and replaced.

Insurance: 5–10%. £10M public liability insurance. That level of cover is not cheap and it is non-negotiable. Never hire a tree surgeon who cannot show you their insurance certificate.

Waste disposal: 10–15%. Wood chip and timber have to go somewhere. All of it loaded, transported and tipped.

Risk and expertise: 7%. What you cannot put a number on. You are paying for someone who knows how to drop a 30-foot section of trunk exactly where they want it. That knowledge comes from years of doing the job. It is what stops the tree going through your roof.

Why the cheapest quote is a gamble

A tree surgeon who quotes £250 to remove a tree next might cutting corners on insurance, cutting corners on safety, or does not understand what they are looking at and can lead the final cost ballooning. When we quote £550 for the same tree, you are paying for a trained climber, £10M insurance, BS3998 standard work, full PPE, and a team that clears up after themselves.

When something goes wrong, a tree surgeon without insurance disappears and you are left with a hole in your roof and no one to claim against. We have seen in it before (thankfully not often). A customer calls us to fix a job someone else started and could not finish. The cheap quote cost them twice.

How to get an accurate price

Send us a photo. Two or three photos showing the tree from different angles, ideally with something in the frame for scale. A person, a car, a fence. Tell us where the tree is in relation to the main building, any power lines, and whether there is vehicle access. We will give you a ballpark figure.
