Ash dieback assessment and removal
Ash dieback, caused by Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, can lead to leaf loss, crown dieback and weakened branches. It doesn’t mean every infected tree should be removed immediately. We assess the tree, what it could reach and whether monitoring, deadwood removal, reduction or removal is the safest sensible outcome.

Signs an ash tree needs checking
- Thin or dying crown
- Premature leaf loss, bare branch tips or a visibly sparse crown, especially near buildings, roads or paths.
- Bark lesions
- Dark or diamond-shaped dead patches around branch unions or on the stem.
- Weak or dead branches
- Deadwood and failed limbs that may become more hazardous as the tree declines.
- Base and root concerns
- Fungal brackets, decay or root movement can add a separate structural risk and need proper assessment.
Symptoms can have more than one cause. We don’t diagnose from a single close-up image or recommend removal simply because a tree is ash.
How far has the ash dieback spread?
We stage the crown by condition because the method and risk change as dieback advances.
- Early stage
- Minor leaf loss or discolouration, with most of the crown still full.
- Mid stage
- A thinning crown, visible lesions and brown keys showing that decline is progressing.
- Advanced stage
- Dying branches and a sparse crown, especially important where people, roads or buildings are close.
- Severe stage
- A largely dead crown. The tree needs an urgent, controlled assessment before failure becomes the deciding event.
Delaying action can mean heavier machinery, more difficult access and a higher bill. We still assess first rather than remove an ash tree solely because it has symptoms.
When removal is the right option
An ash with limited dieback may remain for years with monitoring and targeted work. A heavily declining tree beside a house, road, footpath, play area or other target may need planned removal before a limb fails. The risk, tree condition, access and consequences of failure all matter.

Removal methods and safety
- Straight felling
- Used only where there’s enough open ground and a controlled drop zone clear of people, property and services.
- Sectional dismantling
- Branches and stem sections are lowered under control where the tree is close to buildings, boundaries, roads or paths.
- MEWP or specialist access
- Considered when decay, height or the tree position makes ordinary climbing unsafe. The equipment choice follows the assessment.
- Waste and stump work
- Timber and brash are removed or retained as stated in the quote. Stump grinding is a separate item unless included.
Permissions and reporting
A Tree Preservation Order or conservation-area status can still apply to diseased ash. We check the position before booking and explain the application or notice route. Where an immediate danger creates a limited exemption, the condition and necessary work should be documented. Felling licences, Forestry Commission guidance, protected species constraints and replanting may also matter depending on the site.
We don’t promise a grant or permission without checking the current scheme and property circumstances. If a planning, ecology or forestry specialist is needed, we say so.

Price depends on tree height, condition, proximity to buildings or roads, access, the amount of rigging or specialist equipment, waste handling and whether stump grinding or replanting support is included. We quote after a site visit and set out the scope and exclusions in writing.

Routine pruning, stump grinding and removal without the required consent are outside this service. Work needing a separate survey, ecology input or replanting plan is quoted once the relevant information is available.

Does ash dieback mean the tree must be removed?
No. Some trees can be monitored or managed with deadwood removal. We assess condition, targets and failure risk before recommending retention, reduction or removal.
How do I recognise ash dieback?
Look for crown thinning, premature leaf loss, dead branch tips and dark lesions. Other problems can look similar, so a site assessment is needed before deciding what to do.
Can you remove ash near a house or road?
Yes, subject to the assessment and safe method. Sectional dismantling or specialist equipment may be needed where there’s no safe drop zone.
Do I need permission to remove diseased ash?
A TPO or conservation-area restriction may still apply. We check the address and explain the consent route, including any limited emergency work and required records.
How much does ash dieback removal cost?
