Removing a hedge
Removing a hedge clears the whole line rather than reducing it: we take out the above-ground growth and quote the stump work to suit what comes next. We work across North Yorkshire and County Durham, and whether you are replacing an overgrown boundary with fencing or making space for new planting, we agree how much comes out and what is left before work starts.

Hedge removal before fencing
Tell us where the replacement fence will run and share the fencing contractor’s requirements if you have them. Cutting a hedge down does not leave a clear route for every new post hole: stumps and roots can remain below the surface, and old wire or posts may be buried in the growth.
We agree the section of hedge to remove, stump work, access and waste clearance. Before booking the next contractor, confirm whether further excavation, root removal, levelling or backfilling is needed. Fence installation, post holes and landscaping are not included in hedge removal.
If a neighbour owns or shares the boundary, settle permission and the extent of the work before we arrive. We do not decide boundary ownership or remove a neighbour’s hedge on the strength of an assumed fence line.
Hedge root removal and stump options
- Cut down and leave the stumps
- The hedge is removed above ground, with the remaining stump height agreed in the quote. This can suit a boundary where no digging or immediate replanting is planned, but some species can regrow.
- Stump grinding
- Where equipment can reach the line, we can quote for grinding stumps to an agreed depth. Grinding is not removal of every root. Tell us the proposed fence or planting layout so we can assess the useful depth and working area. See stump grinding.
- Root clearance for the next stage
- If roots must be excavated rather than ground, we assess the space, nearby structures and services first. The quote states any root work we can include and what needs a separate groundworks contractor. We do not promise a root-free trench as part of a standard removal.
- The surface left behind
- We agree whether grinding material stays or is removed. Imported soil, compaction and making good for paving, turf or fencing are not included unless expressly agreed.
Conifer, privet and mixed hedge removal
The species, stem sizes and what has grown through the hedge affect the method. Tall conifer screens may need taking down in sections; established privet and mixed hedges can have several substantial stems along a short run. Self-seeded trees, ivy and wire in the line also affect the work and waste volume.

Boundary hedge clearance
Gate width, steps, slopes and the distance to the vehicle affect how we remove the hedge and carry out the cut material. Let us know if access is through a garage, shared passage or neighbouring land. We assess work beside walls, sheds and fences before deciding how stems can be cut and lowered.
Nearby drains, cables, water pipes, retaining walls and foundations can limit stump and root work. Share any service plans you hold. A visible stump is not evidence that the ground around it is clear for grinding or excavation.
We check for active bird nests before cutting. Active nests are protected whenever they occur, not just during a fixed season. Rural or countryside hedges can also require a hedgerow removal notice; tree protections or planning conditions may affect a boundary. We check the proposed work and explain any permissions needed before it is scheduled.
Hedge removal cost
Hedge removal is quoted per job. The main factors are the length, height and width of the hedge, stem thickness, access, proximity to structures, waste volume and whether stumps are left or ground. Taking out a hedge by an open drive is different from carrying every branch through a narrow passage.
The written quote sets out the hedge length being removed, the agreed stump or root work, clearance of cut branches and any exclusions. We can leave agreed logs or woodchip if wanted. Otherwise, the cut material included in the quote is taken away and the working area tidied.

Common questions
Does hedge removal include the roots?
Not automatically. The quote states whether stumps are left, ground or whether any root clearance is included. Grinding does not remove every root. Tell us if the line needs to be dug for fence posts or planting so we can assess that requirement.
Can you remove a hedge before a new fence is fitted?
Yes. Send the planned fence line and the fencing contractor’s requirements. We agree hedge removal and stump work, and explain any further excavation or ground preparation needed before the fence is installed.
Can you reduce the hedge instead of removing it?
We can assess that option. The species, health and amount of reduction matter, especially with conifers that may not regrow from old wood. See our hedge care service if you want to retain the boundary.
Do you take away the hedge cuttings?
The written quote includes the agreed removal of cut branches and stems. Logs or woodchip can be left by arrangement. We specify separately what happens to stump grindings, old fencing and other material found in the hedge.
Will a removed hedge grow back?
Some species can regrow from remaining stumps or roots. We explain the likely follow-up for your hedge and agree stump work where suitable. A single clearance is not a guarantee that no shoots will return.
