Tree surgery in Coxhoe and the villages around it

We carry out tree removal, sectional dismantling, pruning, stump grinding and hedge work for homes, landlords and managed sites in Coxhoe and the villages either side of the Durham to Sedgefield corridor. Most jobs start with one tree that has outgrown its position: a sycamore or ash over a boundary, a self-set tree that has split at the fork, a stump left in a small back garden, or a hedge that has stopped being a hedge.

Send the postcode, photos of the whole tree and its base, and a photo of how a vehicle reaches it. We arrange a free tree work assessment, confirm condition, ownership, permissions and access, and give you a written quote before anything is booked.

Arborist carrying out controlled tree work in County Durham
Around Coxhoe most of the work is on garden and boundary trees, so the method is planned around what sits underneath rather than open ground.

What decides the method in Coxhoe

Mining-era ground and the trees that grew on it

Coxhoe grew around coal mining in the 18th and 19th centuries, and a good deal of the ground around the village has been worked and reclaimed since. On that kind of ground much of what needs attention is self-set birch, willow and sycamore rather than planted garden stock, and those trees commonly grow with two competing stems and a strip of bark trapped in the union between them. That union is the weak point, and it is where the tree splits first. It is often visible from the ground, and it is one of the first things we look at.

Village lanes, terraces and small back gardens

In the older parts of the village, plots are tight: a lane or a shared entry at the front, a small yard or garden behind, and boundaries that other people's property sits against. If a machine cannot get through, the chipper and tipper stay on the road and the timber is carried out. Tell us about the access at the enquiry stage — it does not make the job impossible, but it changes the time on site and the price.

Roadside trees on the corridor

Where a tree overhangs a footway or one of the roads through the village, the route is kept usable or controlled while the work is done, and we agree who is responsible for that before the date. Roadside and field-boundary ash is common along the corridor, and ash dieback is widespread across County Durham. A declining ash is unreliable to climb because the branch unions go brittle before the tree looks dangerous from the ground, so the answer is often a platform, a winch or a felled approach rather than sending a climber up it. See ash dieback removal.

Farms, field boundaries and hedgerows

Outside the village it is farming country: hedgerows, field corners, farm tracks and roadside trees rather than garden specimens. Hedge reductions and boundary work on that scale are quoted from the same written scope as the domestic work, and staged over more than one visit where the hedge has been left for years.

Commercial and estate work

For farms, estates, landlords and managed sites around Coxhoe we work to a written scope with site-specific risk assessments and method statements, planned around access and working hours. One-off site work sits with commercial tree surgery and recurring visits with commercial tree maintenance.

Trees and permissions: Durham County Council

Coxhoe comes under Durham County Council for Tree Preservation Orders and conservation-area notices. A tree under a Tree Preservation Order needs a consent application before work starts, and a tree of qualifying size in a conservation area needs a section 211 notice with a six-week period that cannot be shortened. We check the address against the council's records before quoting, rather than assume either way from the postcode.

Nesting birds apply everywhere and all year. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it an offence to damage or destroy a bird nest while it is in use or being built, so we check before cutting and stop that part of the work if we find one.

What drives the price here

We quote per job after the tree work assessment, never per tree over the phone. Tree size, species and condition set the baseline, but around Coxhoe the figure is usually moved by access and position: whether a machine can reach the tree, how much has to be lowered on ropes rather than dropped, the carry distance out of a back garden or down a lane, what has to be protected underneath, the route for waste, whether a road or footpath needs controlling and whether a stump follows. A price given without seeing the access is a guess.

What isn't included

Work outside the agreed trees, hedges and vegetation isn't included, and neither is work to a protected tree before consent. Stump grinding is quoted separately unless it is written into the scope. Fencing, drainage and drive or lawn repairs aren't ours. We don't treat Japanese knotweed; we can identify it and clear around it, with treatment referred to a licensed specialist. Storm damage and hung-up trees go through fallen tree removal or emergency tree work.

What customers ask

Common questions

Do you cover Coxhoe and the villages around it?

Yes. We work in Coxhoe, Bowburn, Quarrington Hill, Kelloe, Cornforth, Ferryhill and the surrounding villages. Send the postcode with photos of the tree and the access route so we can confirm the job and the method.

Which council handles a protected tree in Coxhoe?

Durham County Council. Both the Tree Preservation Order register and section 211 conservation-area notices sit with the county council. A section 211 notice carries a six-week period before work can start; a TPO tree needs a consent application. We check the address against the council’s records before quoting.

Why do so many trees around here split at the fork?

Because a lot of them seeded themselves on worked and reclaimed ground and were never pruned. Birch, willow and sycamore commonly grow with two competing stems and bark trapped in the union between them, which is where the tree fails first. It is usually visible from the ground, and a reduction to take weight off the weak side often keeps the tree standing where removal would otherwise be the answer.

Can you get a machine into a back garden on a village lane?

Often, but not always. Send a photo of the lane, the gateway and the route to the tree. If a machine can’t reach it, we climb and rig, cut the timber small and carry it out, which takes longer than the same tree with a drive beside it and is priced into the quote.

Do you take on commercial and estate work around Coxhoe?

Yes. Farms, estates, landlords and managed sites are quoted from a written scope with site-specific risk assessments and method statements, either as one-off work or on a recurring maintenance visit.

Is the stump included in a removal?

Only if it is written into the scope. Stump grinding is a service we also provide, priced by stump size, access and root spread, and ground below ground level to an agreed depth where the ground and underground services allow.
