How often should trees be pruned?

Most garden trees need attention every two to five years depending on species and growth rate. Fruit trees benefit from annual winter pruning. An apple tree pruned every winter produces better fruit, lives longer, and is less likely to drop branches. Fast-growing trees like willow and poplar may need work every two to three years.
